In an exciting live NASA press conference held during the afternoon of February 22nd, 2017, NASA's top scientists discussed the discovery of Earth-like planets in a distant star system, which they called Trappist E, F and G. At least one of the planets they believed to be "rich with water content." After the news was announced, the scientists discussed how they came to calculate the size of these planets and determine that they were located in the inhabitable "Goldilocks" zone, before answering questions from journalists and social media. Credit for the discovery was primarily given to the NASA's Spitzer telescope.
On the surface, there doesn't seem to be anything terribly exciting or surprising about the realization that there are distant planets that might have water on them. NASA has announced similar findings before, so what's so special about this conference? What is special is... this time around, NASA scientists colored the conference with extremely exciting and bold statements that seemed to predict an upcoming discovery of extraterrestrial life, and hint that this specific discovery was just the tip of the iceberg, with one scientists stating "There's been a crescendo to answer these questions that have been on our minds (are we alone in the universe?) ... this is the right time to have this discovery... right now."
Here are some of the highlighted (sometimes, paraphrased) quotes from the NASA press conference that seems to paint a future reality where extraterrestrial life is a reality...
As with the Mars colonization posters NASA made, NASA also showed a scifi picture of space tourists visiting one of the distant planets mentioned in the press conference:
