Incredible eyewitness testimony of an rectangular UFO the size of "several football fields" flying quietly over Austin in the 1980s has just now been submitted to MUFON (case 88913). Apparently the local newspaper covered the event and described it as a satellite or meteor falling, however this witness disagrees:

Huge sized over several football fields noiseless moving from south to north over Austin.

My husband and I were in our 2nd floor apartment. Our grown son had taken the dog downstairs outside the building to go potty. He came back up to tell us to come down and see something. We did not run but walked. We witnessed, along with many other people, a huge rectangular shaped dark object moving slowly overhead south to north. It wle ufas just getting dark and it reflected the street lights underneath and the lights of the area. There were flames shooting out around it. No sound at all and very slow. I t took at least 10 minutes to go over. It was shocking to see. In the paper the next day it said it was a Russian satellite or space debris burning up on reentry. It was not anything like that . It was being guided and slowly traveling. We are not crazy or so gullible to believe that story. Somewhere my son has the clipping from the Austin Statesman. I never made note of the exact date and time. We took no pictures. I think we were all rather dumbfounded.

I noticed the same type vehicle in Austin, TX 2013 while returning home from work. My view was in daylight, I watched it (from Harris Branch) go towards Round Rock. Others have very good photos of the same on the same day. I took a picture with my phone but need to edit it to clarify due to image problems at the time. Others have taken very good photos of the same in the same time frame. As you indicate, I estimated several football fields, with thickness of at least 90' . I noticed the side view first and thought "flying banner", however there was no plane and it was way too big.

I was just telling my wife about this! It was the summer of 1987 and the sun had just gone down. My mom yelled for my brother and I to come outside and that’s when we saw this oddly rectangular shaped thing with lights on it slowly moving through the south Austin sky. I don’t remember it having flames but I do remember a few lights on it. We were on Manzanillo dr close to Brodie lane. It wasn’t a perfect rectangle shape-it had a misshaped looked to it but the weird thing was that it was completely silent. I climbed onto the top of our big family van to get a better look which should show how slowly it moved through the sky. My parents had time to see it, run into the house to call us over, us to run out there and then watch it go by. With still enough time to climb our van and watch it some more. Not a fast moving ufo at all. I’ve always wondered what the heck it was but we’ll never know unfortunately. My mom did call the police and they said a lot of people called it in so it was definitely a mass viewing.
