February 2015 Update: See updates to the MH370 story, possibly related to Russia UFO stories. Really fantastic footage of a UFO interfering with the Russian Proton rocket - and perhaps causing it to destruct - was made famous by one of those "goofy" conspiracy theorists on YouTube. DAHBOO77 noticed the rocket had company while watching seemingly benign news footage of it. Shortly after DAHBOO77 and other viewers noticed the UFO, a few "statements" - if you will - were released by officials and also published on the YouTube account of the news channel sharing the video. One comment was posted by rocket geek Matthew Travis: "Nice comments about something that was nothing but a video artifact, not a missile or UFO. Nothing hit the rocket. The failure actually happened about 9 minutes after launch. The third stage failed - not the first stage. Contact wwith the rocket was lost at T+540 seconds. The second and third stages failed to separate and the payload faring didn't release. The rocket itself failed and was not shot down or hit by anything else. All Proton rockets are grounded pending the outcome of the failure investigation and corrective action to the rocket. 12 Proton rockets have failed since December 2010 - three and a half years. That's 4 per year. Not good." And the YouTube description has since been updated to read: "UPDATE: There was a failure during the third stage burn of Proton, Ekspress-AM4R and the rocket has crashed back to Earth." Hmm... [insert eyebrow-raised emoticon]. See that white dot? That's the so-called digital artifact:

...and then comes out the other side!

The white object can be clearly see crashing into the rocket and appearing to cause it to explode. This is unlikely to be a digital artifact and even so, how could anyone be so sure? Meteor or space junk makes for a better explanation than that.

Cuba Update: Apparently, another potential meteor crash may have happened in Cuba today. Related? From the foreign language news site: "In a report released this morning by Rodas, town in the province of Cienfuegos, witnesses described a very bright light that has come to have large size, comparable to that of a bus, before exploding in the sky."
Meanwhile in Russia...
"it was really unexpectedly. it shined like 10 suns. all my windows in my house was broken. people was in panic in first hours. it's not funny, really. But people is calm now." - Facebook comment on CNN article
Russians living near the Ural Mountains were in for a terrifying surprise yesterday evening (Friday morning, locally) on Valentines Day, February 14th, when a meteor zoomed through the sky and exploded overhead, causing windows to break and hundreds to be injured (last count, 725). So far, 270 buildings are damaged. Fortunately the vast majority of injuries appear to be non life-threatening.
From CNN.com: Amateur video footage showed a bright white streak moving rapidly across the sky, before exploding with an even brighter flash and a deafening bang.
Watch video footage of the explosion:
The frightening event apparently happened in and around the Ural Mountains of Russia.
Considering a much-talked-about asteroid - Asteroid 2012 DA14 - is due to pass by Earth this afternoon, many are scratching their heads about the timing and are a bit spooked.
Of course talk of the end of the world and aliens is brewing on UFO sites and conspiracy forums. The coincidence is a bit unnerving, and as with any "meteor" event, it often gets slapped into the UFO pile. Many believe the Valentines Day meteor may have been something else entirely, from a top-secret military weapon experiment gone wrong or even a crashing space craft. Russia has become famous for its apocalypse-fearing residents and intense paranormal and UFO events. |
