Before famed physicist Stephen Hawking passed, he financially backed the Breakthrough Listen Initiative, essentially a large telescope trying to detect alien signals. Another major source of funding for the SETI program is Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook.
Those who believe that aliens are already visiting planet Earth, and that members of the US government are aware of this, would probably find Zuckerberg's search for extraterrestrial life a waste of time. And money. $100 million, to be precise.
Those who believe the search for extraterrestrial life is a worthy one, however, may be excited to hear that the telescope that the Breakthrough Listen Initiative utilizes just got an upgrade, which will greatly increase its coverage of the cosmos and (apparently) chances of finding alien life.
Scientists have been searching for radio signals since the 70s, however, when the Wow! signal made headlines.
Other similar news stories - of alien signals being detected, but never concluded to be alien - have continued over the years.
Could it be that alien signals have in fact been detected, but that they end up being classified?
Perhaps Mark Zuckerberg is getting plenty of return on his investment. Perhaps the Breakthrough Listen Initiative is actively monitoring alien life in our solar system, rather than searching for it?
