June 10th, 2018 Update: UFOJane has broken down the latest NASA press conference for you:
Summary of NASA Announcement: In today's much-anticipated NASA live discussion, it was announced that organic molecules and methane have been discovered on Mars. The reason that the discovery of methane gas is so interesting is that on Earth, most methane is produced by biology (for example, livestock) and so that means there is evidence that Mars has potential for life. It was also emphasized that the Mars Rover has met its objectives of finding out whether Mars could be habitable and has helped with NASA's plans to possibly colonize Mars one day.
Original live updates
1:38 PM: During the Q&A, NASA explains that methane is produced by biology on Earth (like livestock), and so that is why methane on Mars is so interesting - its' potential biological origin. 1:24 PM: NASA is currently exploring whether or not the methane on Mars has a biological origin or not...and that the theory of biological origin is being "held" and "not rolled out" yet (hmm). 1:21 PM: NASA explains how methane may be trapped underground on Mars today, seeping up through cracks and fissures. 1:18 PM: NASA explains that there are different sources of organic material: biological, rock processes brought in by rivers, and asteroids and meteors. The methane discovery, on the other hand, is not an ancient discovery, but a modern-day one. 1:16 PM: NASA clarifies that it found organic molecules (including propane and benzine) in ancient rocks that were only drilled into about 5 centimeters. 1:11 PM: In 2015, NASA discovered samples by drilling into the Gale Crater, which also had evidence of water. It took a few years for NASA to understand the samples. 1:05 PM: NASA clarifies that the organic molecules discovered could originate from something as simple as an asteroid, not necessarily life. 1:02 PM: NASA announces no discovery of alien life, but discovery of organic molecules (the building blocks of life), which have been trapped in ancient rocks and found in methane gas in the atmosphere.
