A testimony of a UFO over Texas from about 20 years ago has just been reported to MUFON (case 106840). The witness described seeing a UFO report on TV, which got abruptly cut off by commercials. Then the witness went on to see a UFO themselves, specifically a hovering spherical craft, that appeared to have lights coming in and out of it:

When I was in the 7th or 8th grade there was a brief report on the news about people calling in to report a weird UFO sighting and wanting to know if the military was performing any maneuvers that evening. The anchor man was cut off and they quickly went to commercial break. When they came back on air there was absolutely no mention about it again. I went outside because I was very curious. I brought my telescope because the object was hard to see with the naked eye. It was that high up. I was able to focus in on it and saw in great detail a huge spherical object sitting completely still with different colored lights rotating around the middle of the object. There were also smaller objects guarding the big object but were harder to see. They just looked like white orbs. Every few minutes an object would fly out of the big object circle around it and then fly back in.

There was a UFO sighting out of this area in Texas that made news in the 1980s, but it was of a UFO with a triangle top, rather than of a spherical UFO. As well, that case - the Cash-Landrum incident - occurred in 1980, 7 years before this supposed sighting.

Although the sightings may not be identical, perhaps they were part of a big UFO wave in Texas, one big enough to make the news!
