According to a video uploaded to YouTube, as well as local news reports, a large meteor exploded over Plano, Texas. The meteor was so large that it caused a loud, deafening, sonic boom to be heard in nearby Oklahoma, spawning an onslaught of social media attention, including tweets by local meteorologists:
Although a green light or meteor was reported to AMSMeteors.org over North Texas during the evening, I couldn't find very many reports of the meteor filmed in Plano during the afternoon. That said, it appears there were multiple meteors that fell over Texas and Oklahoma on March 13th. What is interesting is a few days prior to this event, a similar "UFO" was spotted in North Texas. Many people online speculated the UFO to be a simple sun dog, but I'm not so sure, especially considering these recent meteor reports. While bolide meteors - meteors that loudly explode overhead and can cause the ground to quake - are not common, in 2017 and 2018 it they have been. Check out some recent stories:
